Sportsman Racers Ready to Invade Crandon for MORR Test Session

Appleton, WI (May 6, 2010) - As the MORR (Midwest Off Road Racing) membership continues to grow, so does the anticipation of the first Sportsman only test day at the “Big House” in Crandon, Wisconsin. After a few discussions between MORR president, Dan Vanden Heuvel and Crandon International Off-Road Raceway CEO, Cliff Flannery earlier in the year, everyone agreed that creating a test day at the TORC series’ biggest track would be a huge boost for all involved parties.

“After a couple of minutes on the phone, Crandon really got behind a Sportsman test day at the track,” remarked Vanden Heuvel. “Cliff and the entire Crandon community understand the importance of supporting the Sportsman racing community.”

The test day on Monday, May 17, will give racers nearly three weeks to make final preparations for the opening Sportsman weekend of the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL. Rounds 1 and 2 will be at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo, Wisconsin. The Antigo track was a mainstay in the Midwest until 2004, and thanks to the voice of the racers and fans, the covered grandstands will be overflowing, as trucks and buggies from all over the country compete on the .7 mile layout.

Longtime racing promoter Ronn Krueger will be overseeing the event with the Sokaogon Chippewa and the Mole Lake Casino & Conference Center as the sponsor of the event. “For a longtime Langlade County really supported off-road racing, now we’re back and the community is really looking forward to the weekend,” noted Krueger.

Even though the Antigo weekend is for Sportsman competition, PRO racers are invited to put on an exhibition after the final race of each day. “It’s designed to be a bonus for the fans and a small test session for the PRO’s before their season opens later in the month at Crandon,” noted MORR VP Ross Hoek.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the upcoming MORR test day on May 17 and TORC Sportsman series opener June 5. Speaking of calendars, remember to pickup a free copy of the limited edition 2010 MORR Event Calendar at an upcoming event. There are three different versions featuring photos of Sportsman racers competing during the 2009 TORC season, as well as advertising from various companies that support the efforts of MORR.

In an effort to get as many off-road race trucks back racing, TORC and USAC have come up with a carburetor restrictor plate that current and past PRO-2 race trucks can use to race the vehicle in Sportsman Limited 2. As stated this will allow a PRO-2 truck to compete on the Sportsman level, but the driver of record cannot be a PRO driver. The driver must be a Sportsman competitor that hasn’t competed at the PRO level. A PRO driver can compete in the Sportsman Limited 2 division only when driving a legal Sportsman Limited truck. The plate was developed and tested a few years ago when a previous sanctioning body considered a similar concept, but it was never implemented.
